Show Hope Book Club: Loving God

Loving God
“‘Loving God’ by Chuck Colson is a classic in my opinion. Introduced to me by Show Hope Founders Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman, I appreciate how Colson uses his personal storytelling and narrative—so fascinating, by the way!—to unpack the beauty of, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,’” Show Hope Director of Communications Nathan Magness said. “I highly recommend it for those new to the faith and even the most seasoned Christian.”
Discussion Questions
- On page 35, the author states, “All my achievements meant nothing in God’s economy.” Have you experienced a revelation like this? What achievements did you realize were not as meaningful in “God’s economy?” What did you realize matters more?
- Can you think of a time when you found yourself putting your faith in “miracles rather than the Maker” (pg 49)?
- Look at the seven objections to reading the Bible found on pages 88-90. Which of these do you hear the most often?
- On page 112, Colson states, “We cannot love God—cannot obey Him—and remain what we are.” Have you seen this transformation take place in your life? Can you recall a time when something had to change in your life for you to love and obey God?
- The author shares an anecdote about Mother Teresa claiming that “it takes a lot of sacrifice” to accomplish “the joy of loving and being loved” (page 148). Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why or why not?
- Discuss the quote “Holiness is obeying God—sharing His love, even when it is inconvenient” (page 156).
- Colson claims that in order to love and act upon God’s justice, we must “surrender the illusion of power and find it replaced by True Power” (page 201). Can you think of an example of this in your own life?
- Discuss the quote “Being there is our witness” (page 224). How is this different from current culture?
