Show Hope Book Club: Gentle and Lowly

Show Hope Monthly Book Club: Gentle and Lowly

Gentle and Lowly

“‘Gentle and Lowly’ gave me a clearer, more tangible picture of Christ’s heart toward me,” Show Hope Director of Development Emily Schafer said. “It helped me to debunk my interest in ‘earning’ the grace of Jesus and instead help me to rest in his gentle and loving embrace of me. It’s a must-read for those who want to be reminded of Christ’s unending love for them.”

As parents and caregivers, with busy schedules and responsibilities to juggle, it is integral to take some time for yourself, and this month, we encourage you to explore “Gentle and Lowly” for a beautiful reminder of who you are in Christ and how his love for you is unchanging. May it leave you with a renewed hope and joy that flows into your family.

Discussion Questions

  • On page 18, the author Dane Ortlund describes how the Bible uses the heart to describe the “central animating center for all we do.” With this description in mind, how would you describe your heart? How would you describe the heart of Christ?
  • Read the description on page 24 of a boy touching a slug. What is the analogy that comes to mind when you think of Jesus touching us as sinners? After reading this book, what analogy does that change to?
  • Reflect on a time when you have “held back” (Page 38) from Christ’s comfort because of fear.
  • How difficult is it to think that there is no part of our lives that has not been tainted from sin. How does that change how you view Christ when you consider that he was tempted “in every respect and yet without sin?”
  • Read Buynan’s list of objections listed on page 62. What objection would you add to this list?
  • Read the analogy on pages 69 and 70. How is this different from how we see society operate today?
  • On page 80, Ortlund describes the roles of justification and the intercession of Christ through the analogy of an older brother cheering on a younger brother at the end of a race, when it looks like the race has already been won. How is this helpful in understanding the role of intercession?
  • Think about Christ as taking on both intercession and advocacy. What does it mean that he holds those two roles at the same time?
  • What habits and routines do you have that encourage you to consider the loveliness of the heart of Christ?
  • How does the heart of Christ relate to the Spirit?
  • How does the heart of Christ relate to the Father?
