One of the first choices you will make in adoption is choosing an agency. While some families choose to pursue adoption through an attorney or consultant, most prospective adoptive parents work directly through a licensed, child-placing agency. Here’s what to look for as you choose an adoption agency:
Look for Hague Accreditation
It is important to find a Hague-accredited agency. This accreditation guarantees that the agency meets international and federal standards as set by the Hague Convention. Begin your agency search by browsing through directories that allow you to add this filter, such as the National Council for Adoption (NCFA) directory or the Christian Alliance for Orphans (CAFO) member directory.
Choose an Agency That Is Transparent About the Process

Get a Clear Breakdown of Costs Upfront
The agency you choose should be able to provide a complete list of costs up front, including home study fees, in-country travel, and agency fees. Having this information as you begin the process will help you to plan accordingly.
Prioritize Education Resources

Look for Thorough Agency Support
Strong agency support—for you, your child, and your child’s birth parents—is an important factor to consider when choosing an adoption agency. Programs like Nightlight Christian Adoptions’ Post Adoption Connection Center provide continued support for everyone involved in the process.
Adoption Agency and Show Hope Eligibility
If you plan to apply for a Show Hope Adoption Aid grant, you must be working with a licensed, child-placing agency that is a 501(c)(3) organization to be eligible. Also keep in mind, if you are on the waiting list with multiple agencies or are working with an adoption consultant, do not apply for a Show Hope grant until you are matched through a placing agency.
