Esperanza Para el Viaje: Hope for the Journey

TBRI Training in Colombia funded by Show Hope

Earlier this year, Show Hope Co-founder Mary Beth Chapman shared this piece of wisdom, driving our Pre+Post Adoption Support work: In a world where pain and brokenness often find their way into our homes, the need for compassion, empathy, and gospel-centered care has never been greater. This deep-seated need is a global issue. It crosses international borders, racial divides, and economic classes. It impacts children from every walk of life, and something must be done about it.

With that vision before us, we launched the Hope for the Journey online learning platform back in the spring, where nearly 10,000 individuals have already been impacted by and equipped with the tools to build connection and trust with the children and teens in their care. Yet we are not stopping there.

Next fall, in alignment with strategic plans, Show Hope will launch an edition of Hope for the Journey for Spanish-speaking communities within the U.S. as well as abroad, including for like-minded partners who are supporting vulnerable children and families internationally.

“Steven and I are thrilled to see the unfolding of Show Hope’s Hope for the Journey resource,” Mary Beth shared. “I cannot wait to experience the finished work in its entirety, and with our team and our trusted partners, I am confident the Spanish edition of Hope for the Journey will be an excellent, culturally relevant resource for parents and caregivers, pastors, and professionals here in the U.S. and around the globe.”

While there will be similar qualities and structures, the Spanish edition of Hope for the Journey (Esperanza Para el Viaje) is not simply a translation of the English edition. In fact, the Show Hope team will film and capture Spanish-specific content within the country of Colombia.

“In partnership with the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at TCU (KPICD) and All God’s Children International (AGCI), filming in Colombia will allow us to capture a more globally Spanish dialect that will be embraced and understood from the U.S. and Latin America to Spain,” Show Hope Executive Director Kristin Parks explained. “In addition, we will also be able to film within a rich culture and heritage that will be more widely embraced across different Spanish-speaking communities—a critical component to understanding Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) as well as its gospel implications.”

For those unfamiliar, TBRI is a care model designed to meet the relational and developmental needs of children and teens, particularly those impacted by loss and trauma. Developed by Drs. Karyn Purvis and David Cross at the KPICD, TBRI considers the whole child—his or her brain, biology, behavior, body, and beliefs—and provides parents and caregivers with a roadmap of practical tools and insights to help children reach their highest potential. Although TBRI is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, at its core remains connection. And for us at Show Hope, we have long viewed TBRI as a practical expression of our faith in Jesus Christ and his gospel—a sentiment shared with TBRI co-creator Dr. Purvis.

“People are able to connect with TBRI more deeply when they learn in their native language,” explained Dr. Danica Knight, Rees-Jones Director of the KPICD and professor of psychology at TCU. “They can listen with their hearts as well as their minds, which means TBRI becomes a part of who they are.”

With the launch, the Spanish edition of Hope for the Journey will include six primary teaching sessions, led by seasoned TBRI Practitioners. The first two teaching sessions will explore foundational information to TBRI, including trauma and its impacts on physical, mental, and emotional development. The following three sessions will examine the three TBRI principles of Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting. And finally, as with the English edition, the final session will dive into the gospel implications of TBRI and how churches and faith communities can embrace the care model.

“Creating Hope for the Journey content specifically for Spanish-speaking cultures allows us to meet families where they are—both linguistically and culturally,” shared Amanda Purvis, AGCI Vice President of Global Impact. “By offering TBRI training in a way that resonates with the lived experiences, values, and traditions of Latin American communities, we anticipate a deeper connection to the material and greater confidence in putting it into practice. This means more church families and foster carers will feel equipped to bring healing, stability, and hope to children impacted by trauma—ultimately strengthening families and transforming futures across the region.”

Stay tuned for more information on Hope for the Journey, Spanish! Filming will take place in late January to early February, with the official launch on August 1, 2026. Spanish-speaking churches and communities within the U.S. will be able to access the content on the Hope for the Journey platform, with global distribution through trusted partners and like-minded organizations and agencies.

Hope for the Journey equips parents and caregivers with the practical tools and understanding to build connection and trust with their children and teens, empowering them to thrive inside and outside their home.
