Hope for the Journey Conference

The conference includes research-based tools to promote attachment and connection in families such as Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) methods developed by Drs. Karyn Purvis and David Cross at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at TCU. TBRI is a care model designed to help meet relational and developmental needs of children and youth impacted by trauma.

Outlined by Show Hope, the Hope for the Journey Conference also explores the gospel as foundational to TBRI and how churches and organizations can better support children and families in their ministries and communities. 

Developed by Drs. Karyn Purvis and David Cross from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KPICD) at TCU, TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) is a care model designed to help meet relational and developmental needs of children and youth impacted by trauma. TBRI considers the whole child—his or her brain, biology, behavior, body, and beliefs—and provides parents and caregivers with practical tools and insight to help their child(ren) reach his or her high potential. And, perhaps most integral, at TBRI’s core is connection—the truth that connection builds trust, and trust builds healthy relationships. 

The Hope for the Journey Conference is modular in nature, and could be consumed in one day or shared over multiple training sessions or weeks. Structurally, the conference includes 4 learning modules based on the principles of TBRI along with a fifth component, The Gospel + TBRI. Also included with each module is a “Going Deeper” teaching video on a select topic as well as a “Practical Perspective” video featuring the voices of adoptive and/or foster families or adult adoptees and/or foster youth alum. (The first four teaching modules are approximately 90 to 100 minutes each, and the fifth teaching module is approximately 60 to 70 minutes.)

Priced low, this simulcast event is modular in nature and could be consumed in one day or shared over multiple training sessions or weeks. The conference is an excellent opportunity to provide support to children, families, and communities that may lack the experience, expertise, or answers needed for those in desperate need of help and guidance. Show Hope is a faith-based organization and evidence of that faith will naturally be part of the Hope for the Journey Conference (as it was with the Empowered to Connect Conference). In an effort to further engage the Church in elevating trauma-competency, the Hope for the Journey Conference includes a fifth supplemental module and additional resources to explore the gospel as foundational to TBRI, as outlined by Show Hope. 

It is Show Hope’s desire that the conference serves as a resource for the churches and organizations that host, allowing them to further open their doors and build relationships with families impacted by adoption and foster care in their communities. 

The conference’s modular format offers hosts the flexibility to make decisions about which portions of the conference are most helpful in their context. 

While the Empowered to Connect Conference was historically a more traditional, two-day event and simulcast, the Hope for the Journey Conference is modular in nature, making the event more accessible to and easily consumable for parents, families, and caregivers. With its focus on parents and caregivers, the conference will intentionally highlight everyday, practical help where hosts can choose how to best utilize the content. The event could be consumed in one or shared over multiple training sessions or weeks. 

The Hope for the Journey Conference also includes a fifth learning module—The Gospel + TBRI—and will highlight adult adoptee/foster care alum as well as family voices and experiences, offering parents and caregivers greater insight to the often complex needs of children impacted by adoption or foster care. 

Post conference, Show Hope provides practical application guides with thoughts, questions, and reflections as well as action steps and activities. These guides reinforce concepts and teachings shared during the conference along with practical ideas for incorporating conference insights into the day-to-day. The aim is to further educate and encourage families impacted by adoption and foster care as they seek to provide hope and healing to the children entrusted to them.
