3 Ways Children Can Care for Orphans

3 Ways Children Can Care for Orphans

In Matthew 19, Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Through his ministry here on earth, Jesus welcomed children and shared with those who would hear the importance of their value and place in his kingdom. As parents, we can encourage and teach our children to model God’s heart for children who have been orphaned in real, tangible ways. The following are three ways children can care for orphans.

1.  Pray Together

As a family, commit to praying for children who have been orphaned. Your children can choose a specific region of the globe or a country, and pray, together, for the children who are vulnerable there. Ask your kids if they have specific prayer requests too—you might be surprised to hear their tender hearts for orphans.

2. Create “Welcome” Baskets

Your family can prepare welcome baskets for newly adoptive or foster families in your community. By preparing these gifts, your children can become involved in helping ease the transition period for new families. Fill a basket with snacks for the whole family, games, a stuffed animal, and handmade cards and welcome banners. Get creative, and have fun!

3. Donate Allowance

If you give your children a weekly or monthly allowance, encourage  them to give a portion to Show Hope or other charitable organizations. Agree to match their donations with gifts of your own.  And if your children are older, encourage them to set aside money from their weekly paychecks to give toward orphan care.

The Bible clearly spells out for us God’s heart for children, particularly children who have been orphaned. At Show Hope, we are working to care for orphans by engaging the Church and reducing barriers to adoption. We encourage you to learn more about Show Hope and the needs we are striving to address.
