5 Ways to Support Adoptive & Foster Families

When the Bible instructs us  “to visit the orphan and widow in their affliction”, it is not just speaking to those who are called to adopt or provide for vulnerable children through foster care – it is speaking to everyone. So what happens when you aren’t in the position to become a foster parent or don’t feel called to add to your family through adoption? We’ve got good news: there’s still SO much you can do! Here are five easy ways to support those who foster or adopt:

1. Do Research

While you may already have friends who foster or adopt, it can be very helpful to understand the process of adoption or foster care more fully as you walk this journey with them. Perhaps the best way, however, is to dive into Scripture itself. As you prepare your heart to walk through the experience of foster care or adoption with your friends, explore all the amazing ways God calls and invites us to care for orphans!

2. Donate

You may not be in a position to donate large sums of money, but if there’s one thing Show Hope has seen, it’s that every dollar can make a huge difference. Whether it’s for our Care Centers to provide life-giving care to orphans with special needs or for Adoption Aid grants to help reduce the financial barrier keeping waiting children from entering the love of a family, every dollar makes a difference. Consider becoming a Show Hope Sponsor and see how God can use your faithful generosity just $35 a month to change the lives of waiting children!

3. Community Support

Encourage your friends who adopt or provide foster care to be honest about what they need…and then get creative about how you can help! They may need dinner once a week or school supplies for their kids. Maybe they just need a night out, like every busy couple that is looking for a way to keep their marriage strong while raising children! You’ll never know how you can help if you don’t ask! And once you know, you can mobilize your community to support and love them well. We would love to help you explore all the creative ways you and your community can care for adoptive and foster families!

4. Listen

Sometimes the most important thing you can do is also the simplest: listen! Your friends and family may be experiencing aspects of their parenting journey that they never imagined. They may just need a supportive and listening ear as they navigate the unique needs, challenges and victories of their children as they pursue connection and healing!

5. Prayer

If there’s one thing you can do that will truly support and care for families who adopt or provide foster care for children, it’s this: pray! Pray for the Lord’s strength as they actively engage the needs of their children. Pray for wisdom as they step into new experiences every morning. Pray for peace as the future holds countless unknowns for children in foster care. Pray for God to break through in tangible ways to restore hope to waiting children.

At Show Hope, it’s our mission to empower every person in their call to care for orphans, which means we want to empower YOU in whatever way you feel called. Whether you want to become a forever family for a waiting child, would like to provide financial grants so that more children can enter the love and protection of a family, or find another way to get involved, we would love to explore creative ways that you can care for orphans. Everyone can do something and we can’t wait to see what you’ll accomplish!
