If you participated in our first ever Empowered to Connect Simulcast in April 2015, we want to thank you for joining us and nearly 20,000 others across North, Central, and South America. By your presence it is clear that you are deeply committed to the children you are called to love and serve. This makes you a true inspiration and a kindred spirit, and we are honored to be on this journey together with you.
Our hope and prayer is that you walked away from the Empowered To Connect Conference with a clear understanding that there are ANSWERS and there is HOPE. No doubt the challenges you face (and will face in the future) as a parent, parent-to-be, ministry leader, or professional are real and in many cases significant. Sometimes it feels almost overwhelming to know what to do first. So here a few tips to help you with this:
A simple way to approach the next step is to write down the top three challenges that you are currently experiencing with your child. Then, considering all that you have learned, focus on one challenge at a time. You can certainly begin to implement other things that you learned at the conference – sometimes it is the little things that make a big difference. However, we encourage you to develop a plan and intentionally move forward on the biggest challenges that you currently face. This will allow you to become intentional about how you are going to pursue lasting change.
Our hope is that you will continue to learn about what you were introduced to at the ETC Conference. Watch, read, and listen to the hundreds of free resources at www.empoweredtoconnect.org. Watch the DVDs from Dr. Purvis’ Institute of Child Development. Read some of the books that we recommended, which cane be purchased on Amazon or from the ETC online store at www.etcstore.org. And we encourage you to also learn from other experienced parents who understand your journey and share your conviction that healing comes through connection.
Much of what we discussed at the ETC Conference involves learning new ways of responding and relating. These skills and patterns can only be learned through consistent practice. As you practice you will no doubt get it wrong at times, but even that is an opportunity to practice making mistakes and then humbly repairing them. You will be amazed that the more consistent you are in practicing this way of parenting and relating, the more natural it will become – for both you and your child.
We believe that by God’s design we were made for connection. Just as your child needs to experience the transforming power of connection, so do you. This journey, with both its joys and challenges, was not meant to be traveled alone. This is why it is critical that you find others to travel this journey with you. Those that will respond to you with compassion, understanding, and grace. And it is our prayer that you will also discover a deeper connection with God – the one who loves you, is for you, and is the true source of healing in our lives.
We know there will be ups and downs along the way, but we are confident that you can do this. Remember, today is the first day of the rest of your journey, and today is the perfect opportunity to begin to put into practice what you have learned. As you do, we believe that you will experience what we know to be true – that CHANGE is possible, the CONNECTION heals, and that HOPE is real.
