The Tan Family received a Show Hope grant to help bring their sons, Asher and Levi, home from Ethiopia! Recently, they were able to share their gratitude with Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman at a fundraising event in California. Read below as Mica Tan describes her family’s journey to adoption and how Show Hope sponsors & donors were a big part of it!
I can clearly remember being about 11 years old, listening to Christian radio and hearing a commercial about adoption. Immediately after that commercial, “Free” by Steven Curtis Chapman began playing. While I sat there and listened to that song, I knew that I would adopt someday.
As I grew up, Steven Curtis Chapman’s music continued to inspire me. When I took my first mission trip to Panama, his lyrics inspired me as a I reached out to those around me. As I took several trips in the next few years, lyrics like “I saw the face of Jesus in a little orphan girl” motivated me and helped to deepen my call to care for orphans and widows.
In 2006, I graduated college, boarded a plane, and moved to Ethiopia. After two years in Ethiopia, I moved back home and songs like “Beauty Will Rise” helped draw me closer to God during the difficult transition. In the 2010, I was blessed to marry my husband and we immediately began saving money for adoption. We waited anxiously for a referral and within days of the paperwork finalization (which took about 1.5 years), we received a call that there were two boys whose mother had just passed away. We had no idea how we could afford adoption (let alone siblings!), so we took a leap of faith and applied for a Show Hope grant.
We soon found out that we were awarded a grant!! It was far more than we could have hoped or dreamed. I still get overwhelmed with tears just thinking about how God has used Show Hope and the Chapman family to encourage and inspire my family’s journey. How amazing it is that we serve a God who orchestrates our lives so perfectly! We were blessed to bring home Asher and Levi in 2013. They have been learning about adoption through the children’s book Shaoey and Dot by Steven Curtis & Mary Beth Chapman. They love Jesus and have taught us more about God than anyone we’ve ever met. We look forward to adopting again in the future!
We are beyond blessed and so grateful for the ministry of Show Hope! It was such a blessing to meet the Chapmans and share our gratitude in person.
With love and thanksgiving,
