God’s call to care for orphans is woven throughout Scripture. Whether you are working to add to your family through adoption or are considering other ways that your gifts and talents might be used to provide for the needs of waiting children, it is clear that we are all called to do something.
It doesn’t take a great deal of time in Scripture to see that God relentlessly pursues us with the deep and abiding love of a father – our Father. Here are a few verses that speak to the role adoption plays in our own journeys:
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” (John 14:18)
“Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’ and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.’ And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ there they will be called ‘sons of the living God’.” (Romans 9:25-26)
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ…” (Romans 8:14-17)
These verses remind us that God has adopted us into his family and it is through this adoption that we receive a multitude of blessings. The promises of God as spoken through his Word are true and can be trusted. He will not leave us. He will never give up on us. His Spirit seals us as his own. Let us trust that everyday he restores hope through his unending grace and abounding love.
With the blessings of his promises, we have great hope as we “visit orphans and widows in their affliction” (James 1:27). With more than 140 million children around the world who are without a family, we are called to join together to care for orphans in their distress – just as God cares for us.
